Never mind glass, sometimes it feels like a concrete ceiling! As a woman in her late fifties who’s had a portfolio career (a bit of this, a bit of that), I’ve also suffered quite badly from imposter syndrome. Not any more. I’m cured. There is no silver bullet, no easy way to get to this place in life. But I want to share some aspects of my career, and the way I approach work now, that I hope will encourage and inspire you.
As a writer who frequently goes out to meet her public, who willingly allows films of her speaking to appear on social media and who is even contemplating Tik Tok lives with the help of her teenage children, you’d think she (and look how I’ve lapsed into third person here) had it all sorted. I still carry a burden from childhood and my teenage years. I have gone through trauma and pain, as we all do, but I look on it as something which has helped me to build resilience. For me, it’s all about authenticity, compassion and honesty. And humour. Lots of that.
I won’t be doing any pretending. I won’t be wearing a mask. My hope for you is that you will go away encouraged, uplifted, motivated to keep pushing and to pursue your dreams.
